For our Air Investigation in Science today we made parachutes to observe air resistance.
Observations:
"We used a napkin, string, a paper clip, and stickers" to assemble the parachute.
"The parachute could catch the wind and float."
Concept: Air resistance makes the parachute fall slowly.
We took the parachutes outside to "float" them in the wind.
[Students were allowed (at this time ONLY) to stand on a bench or post to provide more height for their parachute to work properly. Students were supervised at all times during this activity.]

Scholastic Book Order - Now "Scholastic Reading Club"
Scholastic book order forms will be sent home today. Look through the flyer and check out what they have to offer. I'm excited about the new Magic Tree House book: Hurry Up, Houdini!
I am a fan of good magicians / illusionists and have read biographies about and books by Harry Houdini. Mary Pope Osborne writes fun books for children, and I'm looking forward to read her take on Houdini.
You can return the order form to me with a cash or check payment, or order online using a credit card. Here is the link to our ordering page:

Orders are due in class or online by Friday, August 30.

Air is There / Air Under Water
The past two Science periods, we have talked about what we know about air already, and discovered what can be done with air. We even used air to keep foam balls at the bottom of a basin filled with water, and paper towels in a vial dry! How is that possible? Ask your child.

We had Chapel and talked a lot about what Second Grade is like. Tomorrow we will start with our regular schedule, with the exception of Spanish (that will start next week).

Book Float!
Today was Atonement's annual Book Float parade. Our Book Float showed our work for the last three weeks on "Beginner's World Atlas". We learned about each country's land, climate, people, plants, animals, and more! This was a big project and the students enjoyed showing what they learned.
